PEAR Dependency Removed
2009.05.06 17:10
The Templation repo just received its first commit in over a year. I tagged beta3.1 for the handful of people that are still on PHP 4, and migrated from PEAR_Error to PHP 5 native Exceptions. That allowed the removal of PEAR, which now means Templation is a trivial install in any PHP 5 environment.
These days I'm using Templation as an aid for designers working on HTML for Rails applications without the need to get the whole Rails stack up and running. It works with the default Apache/PHP build in OS X now, which greatly lowers the barrier to entry.
Future development will continue along these lines--leveraging PHP's strengths. No external dependencies. Easy installation and upgrade. Unified includes/_data directories (and _data directories allowed at any level). Moving /cache out of /data. Unit tests. And quite possibly a default Rails install file layout.

Templation Now on Github

These days I'm mostly doing Ruby work, so it should come as no surprise as I'm part of the mass exodus from Subversion to Git. Let's face it, Subversion is only an acceptable SCM in comparison to CVS. The only thing that's kept from moving to another system has been the lack of critical mass of any of the superior systems. What use is a SCM if none of your fellow developers are using it?
Okay so with the recent release of Github and the Ruby on Rails project officially switching, the time just seems right. I'm moving all my personal open source projects over to Github.

Hey maybe this is even a harbringer of a Ruby version of Templation. Could be sweet?

Site Back Up!
2008.04.14 15:29
A few of you noticed this site has been down for a couple months. This was due to an urgent need to get my email off of TextDrive whose service deteriorated under an increasingly dismissive and unaccountable attitude from the administration there who apparently have more important things to do than worry about whether their shared mail servers are blacklisted or even able to process mail in a reasonable amount of time (say less than several hours). I simply pointed my DNS to Dreamhost but didn't have time to migrate the sites over.
However after this site being down for a couple months, I realize that what I should have done is to simply point my A record to TextDrive so I can continue to host this site which has performed well over the years at TextDrive (I do have lifetime hosting here). I have done so now, and will continue to maintain the site going forward.
